Bridge Inspector 1- Starting salary is $14.98/hourly with an additional $3.00 premium pay for every hour worked.

Bridge Inspector 2- Starting salary is $17.15/hourly with an additional $3.00 premium pay for every hour worked.

Bridge Inspector 3- Starting salary is $18.35/hourly with an additional $2.00 premium pay for every hour worked.

Bridge Inspector 4- Starting salary is $22.47/hourly with an additional $2.00 premium pay for every hour worked.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of a high school diploma or GED.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance will substitute for the high school diploma or GED.

Job Concepts

FUNCTION OF WORK:

To participate in on-the-job training to learn standard procedures and practices associated with bridge inspection.

LEVEL OF WORK:

Entry.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Direct from a Bridge Inspector 5 or Engineer. Alternative reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None.

LOCATION OF WORK:

Department of Transportation and Development. Other locations may be approved by SCS.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from Engineering Technicians by the presence of bridge inspection duties.

Differs from Bridge Inspector 2 by the absence of experienced-level bridge inspection duties.

Examples of Work

35% Leads a two or more manned team performing inspections on new or existing on-system or off-system bridges in the district: inspecting all deck, superstructure, substructure and embankment elements for damage of the deterioration and its effect on the structural integrity of the bridge as a whole; making recommendations as to establishing, raising or lowering legal posted loam limits of bridges based on the condition of various structural elements, the extent of deterioration and any repairs made to these deteriorated components; and in cases of critical deficiencies may either recommend immediate closure or may immediately close the bridge, depending on the extend of seriousness of the findings of the inspection. Responsible for signing bridge inspection report forms certifying the accuracy of the reported data. Must be able to climb to extreme heights at times during inspections.

20% Conducts/performs in-depth inspections of larger, complex structures such as movable bridges, bridges with special details like pin & hanger connections, suspend and cantilever spans, truss type bridges, and bridges with fracture critical and fatigue prone details, etc.

10% Trains and approves the results of inspection duties performed by lower lever technicians as they experience and become proficient at performing bridge safety inspections.

15% Reviews the activities of local jurisdiction bridge owners (Cities and Parishes) regarding compliance with FHWA/DOTD regulations; determines level of compliance with the interim inspections, load rating, load posting / closing requirements of the National Bridge Inspection Standards, which will be the basis for allowing or denying continued participation in the Federal Off-System Bridge Rehabilitation and Replacement Program.

10% Reviews the findings of bridge safety inspections, estimating labor, equipment and material necessary to perform needed repairs; assists Bridge Maintenance and Inspection Supervisor with coordinating and scheduling the maintenance activities of the district’s bridge maintenance and repair crews as necessary

5% Work as a liaison between the district and contractors performing any contract maintenance repair work on any state bridge structure, bridge rails, guardrails, and crash attenuators. Review invoices that come into the office to be paid. Investigate marine traffic accidents on major structures crossing navigable waterways.

5% Will be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.
