BSD SRF - Proteomics

About the Department

The Proteomics Platform at the University of Chicago is a research facility located in the Knapp Center for Biomedical Discovery (KCBD). The mission of the facility is to develop and apply advanced proteomics techniques to answer both basic and translational scientific questions with the help of state-of-the-art mass spectrometry instruments. We offer scientific consultation tailored to each project, proteomics sample preparation services, and education to help researchers design, perform, and interpret complex proteomics data. We aim to support both the University of Chicago research community and beyond.

Job Summary

This position provides technical support activities related to scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.

The successful candidate will work in the Proteomics Platform at the University of Chicago. The technician will serve a critical role by maintaining laboratory instruments, preparing samples, and performing quantitative proteomics experiments using advanced mass spectrometers at the Platform. This is a great opportunity for someone interested in exploring the rapidly advancing field of proteomics and working with some of the most advanced instruments currently available, which several next-gen Orbitrap instruments. The technician will also learn liquid chromatography techniques and several data software used for quantitative proteomics data analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine laboratory maintenance and research activities including proteomics sample processing and method development and optimization.
  • Performs LC-MS/MS and other mass spectrometry analyses to generate quantitative global and targeted proteomics data for a variety of research projects in collaboration with investigators.
  • Participates in scientific discussions and brainstorming sessions regarding experimental design, and new technological development and innovation around various research themes requiring proteomics.
  • Provides technical and administrative support for a research project.
  • Collects and enters data. Assists in analyzing data. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor\'s degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.

Experience:

  • Working in a research laboratory or core facility.
  • Previous experience with at least one project using Orbitrap mass spectrometry instruments.
  • Working within a mass spectrometry-based research laboratory.
