Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Systems Engineer III in Cold Spring Harbor, New York

Position Description

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, located on the North Shore of Long Island, is seeking an experienced Senior Systems Engineer with expertise in Microsoft Exchange and the Windows Server operating system. Position Responsibilities

Ensure the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of core messaging functions by monitoring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing systems.
Mentor and develop junior-level system engineers, sharing your expertise and fostering their growth.
Investigate incidents and problems, implementing appropriate corrective actions to restore service and prevent future occurrences.
Perform technical software configuration, reboots, and other remedial actions on servers as needed.
Collaborate with teammates, business leadership, and vendors to develop technical roadmaps aligned with organizational strategy and objectives.
Participate in cross-functional and project teams to evaluate technology solutions, including vendor assessment, platform selection, prioritization, and integration.
Lead the technical aspects of projects, particularly the migration to O365, enhancing collaboration capabilities, and driving upgrades and technical refresh efforts.
Perform weekend on-call duties as required.

Position Requirements

Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or related discipline. 4-7 years of relevant IT experience is preferred. 6 years of related IT experience can be substituted in lieu of a degree.Experience:
3 years of system administration experience.
Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience administering, configuring, and supporting Microsoft Exchange (preferably 2016, 2019), Exchange Web Services, and Exchange Online.
Experience planning and performing Exchange migrations and configuring/supporting Microsoft Office 365.Strong troubleshooting skills in a growing environment, identifying and mitigating architectural risks in Exchange infrastructure.
Familiarity with mixed Linux, Mac, and Windows desktop environments interfacing with Microsoft Exchange and Active Directory.
Knowledge of certificates, scripting, Mimecast, Rapid7, and Linux is a plus.
Working knowledge of NFS/SMB/FTP/SSH & HTTP, authentication via OpenLDAP and Active Directory, configuration and administration of DHCP and DNS, and managing multiple domains and routing concepts.
Understanding of Enterprise Vault solutions to reduce active server storage requirements is preferred.
Proficiency in scripting/automation through Exchange PowerShell or other scripting languages is desired.
Comfortable with Active Directory domain administration.
Familiarity with fundamental networking/distributed computing environment concepts.
Extensive experience in planning, deploying, and documenting patch and configuration updates.
Knowledge of Disaster Recovery for High Availability in a large environment.
Experience with cumulative and security update processes for Exchange Server and Microsoft Windows Server.
Experience maintaining Database Availability Groups (DAGs) and handling server patch management utilizing SCCM.
Skilled in log reviews, incident analysis, and identifying issue trends.Qualifications:
Proven track record of effective teamwork and supporting peers towards improved processes and results.
Ability to triage and properly classify incidents, prioritizing work efforts accordingly.
Independent problem-solving and self-direction.
Strong adherence to best practices for system stability and security.
Excellent time management skills, with the ability to work within an IT Service Management/ticketing system.
Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including strong documentation abilities.
Familiarity with other mail systems such as Sendmail and Postfix.
Proficiency in PowerShell scripting.
Capable of writing purchase justifications, delivering presentations to internal audiences, and positively interacting with upper management.

The salary range or hourly rate listed is a good faith determination of potential base compensation that may be offered to a successful applicant for this position at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future.
