This is a term appointment not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service. Salary: $32.75 (Step 01) to $38.20 (Step 5); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01. Responsibilities As a Maintenance Mechanic within the Columbia Environmental Research Center, some of your specific duties will include: Providing facility operations and maintenance of property. Performing preventative and corrective maintenance activities on HVAC systems. Performing preventative and corrective maintenance on plumbing. Performing preventative and corrective maintenance on electrical. Performing maintenance and repair tasks related to grounds, buildings, and utilities. Performing visual examinations and operational tests. Physical Effort - Considerable standing, stooping and bending is required. Climbing and working from ladders and scaffolds in stretched, cramped or awkward positions is necessary. Using a hammer and other hand tools necessitates considerable arm and hand movement and dexterity. Items up to 50 pounds are lifted and carried. Items over 50 pounds are infrequently carried or others assist with movement. Working Conditions - Works both inside and outside. When inside, frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise. When outside, is exposed to bad weather, works in mud, and in wet or icy areas. Either inside or outside, the employee is exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat and fumes. Typically inspects parts equipment, and systems, which are dirty, oily, or greasy. Subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while positioning and moving equipment. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective hearing devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, and protective clothing. Some safety equipment may be hot and uncomfortable and will be worn for long periods of time. Qualifications There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, applicants must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform the basic work of the position without more than normal supervision through experience shown in the written resume and responses to the job related task statements in this announcement. To be basically qualified for this position applicants must meet the identified screen-out element below. Without more than normal supervision, perform the duties of a Maintenance Mechanic such providing technical oversight over facility maintenance that includes repairing and maintaining building systems such as ventilation and circulation systems, heating and air conditioning systems, electrical systems, plumbing systems; constructing and making minor modifications to existing structures. Selective Placement Factor: In addition to meeting the basic qualifications described above, you must also meet the following selective placement factor in order to qualify for this position: Applicant must possess an EPA approved, Section 608 Technician Certifications "Type I" and "Type II" - OR - Applicant must possess an EPA approved, Section 608 Technician Certification "Universal".
