As Geothermal Engineer / District Energy Engineer , you will be responsible for characterization of a variety of geothermal and geoexchange energy systems as we expand our global energy transition portfolio with a particular focus on North America.

Your primary responsibilities will focus upon providing advisory on geothermal resources associated with heating and cooling projects, working closely with our geoscience and reservoir engineering teams in New Zealand and North America, providing support if needed to our Asian and other regional operations.

This position performs geospatial, thermodynamic, technology, market and economic analysis, with an emphasis on utility- and community-scale geothermal energy systems and infrastructure. Work may also include industrial process applications, water conservation goals, scope 1 and scope 2 emissions analysis, among others. The successful candidate will perform engineering/economic design of thermal energy networks and low- or no-emissions energy systems in cooperation with geothermal scientific, mechanical, thermal, chemical, control systems, electrical, and HVAC engineers.

You will collaborate with our technical leadership, operations, client account managers and sales professionals on pursuits of strategic importance to the firm, and in the internal promotion of geothermal energy as a possible solution for our existing multi-sector client base. You’ll be expected demonstrate collaboration and high levels of communication and problem-solving skills.

The geothermal market overall is experiencing an increase in activity with strong development growth. Jacobs has a long history of providing advisory to clients and is looking to further strengthen our team in this space.

Here’s what you’ll need :

· Relevant master's degree and 2 or more years of experience, or relevant bachelor’s degree and 4 or more years of experience

· Hands-on industry experience with geothermal development

· Experience with transient and complex systems simulation programs or languages such as

TRNSYS, Simulink, and Modelica

· Experience with geospatial software such as Arc and/or QGIS

· In addition, the successful candidate must have demonstrated ability/experience:

o to conduct complex quantitative analysis with the ability to qualify results for broad audiences

o to solve novel, multi-dimensional problems.

o to perform district energy analysis, data processing, sensitivity analysis, modeling, and interpretation.

o to communicate effectively and succinctly in both writing and speaking.

o to disseminate results through conference appearances and publications.

o clarity in writing for technical and non-technical audiences

o stay informed of current and key issues affecting their area of expertise, e.g., geothermal power and distributed geothermal applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

· Licensed Professional Engineer (PE, PEng)

· Experience with Aspen Plus, Python, TESPy, or similar.

· Familiarity with dynamic simulation models for buildings, district energy, and HVAC control systems  

· Familiarity with the U.S. and international district energy systems

· Familiarity with geothermal direct use and geoexchange district energy systems

· Experience as trainer for engineering and scientific industry personnel

· Knowledge of U.S. DOE geothermal research trends and funding mechanisms

Your role will include the following activities/responsibilities:

Technical and Team

· Design of hybrid geothermal, geoexchange, and low-emissions energy systems.

· Flexibility in energy system design should include chillers, heat pumps, small electric generation equipment, heat recovery units, and novel heat transfer mechanisms.

· Mentor junior staff in the design, implementation, and reporting.

· Work within a multi-disciplinary team to create the energy systems of the future.

· Participating with senior staff to conceptualize designs at the request of commercial, governmental, residential, and other clientele.

· Analyzing data related to aquifer exploitation, thermal demand mapping, and mechanical systems in place.

· Formulating retrofit strategies, construction rollout strategies, and contractor engagement procedure for novel thermal energy systems.  

· Nurturing existing customer relationships and ensuring the integrity of work through review of final products, deliverables, and post-delivery performance.

· Verifying personnel capabilities and forecasting workforce availabilities for complex district energy system design projects.

· Developing in-house tools and models that distinguish Jacobs from typical mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering consultancies.

· Writing technical sections for funding applications on behalf of various public, private, and non-profit organizations.

· Ability to provide project results under strenuous analysis timelines.

· New business acquisition in low- and no-emission thermal energy network development

· Develop and maintain strong key client relationships

· Foster collaborative teamwork amongst our Asia-Pacific and North America teams, and with global skill centers that can support our projects

· Maintain compliance with Jacobs QA procedures, including the deliverables review QA process (Global skills are available to support).

· Bid preparation and submittals as required

· Support sales leads, Client Account Managers, and project managers in the delivery of financially successful Proposals.

· Support Client Account Managers to proactively identify opportunities that can raise our profile and reputation with clients

Travel

· The role will be US or Canada based, but remote work is supported. Remote work is flexible but we are encouraging an average of 2 days/week in office work, to foster team development and knowledge sharing.

· Travel – primarily North America, but also other international destinations depending on projects.

· Availability to be up to 50% site based depending on project needs.
