Workdays/Hours: Monday - Friday 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
PPosition devoted to providing repair and maintenance of equipment, vehicles, and related systems. Incumbents perform a broad range of specialized vehicle and equipment repair requiring advanced knowledge and experience, using independent initiative to solve technical problems. Incumbents may assist in training staff and serve as a second level of check for accuracy or supervise/lead lower-level staff. Decision-making includes how and when tasks are carried out within an operational process, limited by the selection of the process and establishment of deadlines and outcomes.
The employee will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining motor equipment, to include inspecting equipment and vehicles; running performance tests; welding and painting equipment; repairing engines and equipment parts; processing paperwork; performing service requests; performing preventative maintenance; completing work orders; and maintaining service records.
Duties/Responsibilities
Performs preventative maintenance operations to maintain and repair small engines; performs minor repairs on large equipment; inspects equipment and vehicles, running performance tests; welds and paints equipment; repairs engines and equipment parts; and ensures compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
Responds to emergency road calls; troubleshoots complex or escalated mechanical and related issues; tows vehicles to assigned locations; and coordinates with Fleet Department or vendors to facilitate repairs.
Prepares, maintains, and/or processes reports, records, work orders, and other documents; enters/updates data; gathers, compiles and reviews information; and proofs work for accuracy and completeness.
Monitors and maintains the shop supply inventory; orders supplies; issues tools, supplies, and equipment to maintenance and construction crews, as needed.
Ensures department compliance with monthly Fleet equipment and vehicle maintenance through collaboration with department staff and coordination with Fleet Department. Assist with preparing service schedules.
Develops, implements, and manages departmental fleet optimization, vehicle utilization, and key management programs including standard operating procedures and training for departmental staff as required.
Monitors automatic vehicle location (AVL) equipment for functionality, performing repairs as required, ensuring removal and deactivation of devices from decommissioned vehicles, and installation and activation of devices in new equipment. Monitoring and disseminating reports as required to ensure compliance with maintenance and utilization recommendations, City policies, and departmental standard operating procedures.
Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSET, TASC).
Four years (4) of fleet and/or equipment maintenance experience related to assignment.
Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record.
Position is critical to emergency operations and will report to work despite or because of an emergency or disaster event.
Additional Preferred Skills
Experience using a CMMS system such as City Works or Asset Essentials.
Experience working in unconditioned spaces for extended periods of time, warehouse has no air conditioning.
This position is subject to on-call, recall, and after-hours work and work during inclement weather.
NC Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a Tanker Endorsement and satisfactory driving record.
Experience with coordinating or performing preventative maintenance operations to maintain and repair small engines.
Fleet and/or equipment maintenance experience.
Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
Experience with installation, monitoring functionality, and removal of automatic vehicle location (AVL) tracking devices on light and heavy-duty commercial equipment.
