The City of Durham’s Department of Water Management (DWM) (https://www.durhamnc.gov/944/Water-Management) wants YOU to join our team of more than 380 talented and dedicated employees that provide critical water and sewer services for Durham’s 309,000 plus residents. Not only do we deliver the Best Tasting Water in the state to our customers each and every day, but we also make sure that the wastewater leaving our facilities is carefully treated to protect the environment. We have a wide-ranging variety of positions open to match your skill set – mechanics, engineers, maintenance specialists, technicians, customer billing techs, and much more. If you have a passion for managing vital water resources, protecting the environment, providing excellent customer service, and keeping the water and wastewater in the pipes, bring your skills and talent to Durham!
Due to expansion, we have vacancies for skilled lift station pump mechanics to help our congenial team provide preventative and corrective maintenance to pump failures or malfunctions at the 60+ lift stations servicing the City of Durham, NC. The purpose of this position is to perform daily inspections and routine housekeeping at assigned lift stations to ensure that they are operating properly. This includes but is not limited to the following; inspecting the operation of pumps and motors, level controls, air compressors, wet wells, bar screens, float controls, sump pumps, comminutors, generators, surge relief valves, electrical controls, audio/visual alarms, & check for structural damage. You must climb ladders, often in confined spaces, with the ability to reach and work with arms extended.
This role ensures all audio/visual and SCADA alarms are tested at each station for proper operation. Job tasks could include repairing the following; check valves, gate valves, air compressors, repacking pumps, replacing bearings and mechanical seals in pumps, inspecting/replacing/maintaining bar screens and grinders. Pump pressures also must be checked and logged at each station to try to determine any unseen problems.
This position is responsible for semi-annual preventive maintenance on each assigned lift station. This includes pulling each pump and checking impellers, volutes, and wear rings for wear. All gate valves and by-pass line valves are operated and exercised. Oil is changed in all submersible pumps, and dry pit pumps are greased and lubricated. Pulleys and belts are inspected on pumps and motors by using established alignment methods and math for installation and corrections. Wet wells must be cleaned by a vac truck, and all floats must be cleaned and inspected for proper operation.
Operational tasks also include entering all lift station data into a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) by the use of a tablet and computer. Several of the stations are located in residential areas and therefore you are to keep your assigned lift stations clean and as needed, trim grass and pick up trash.
