Job Description

MAIN FUNCTION:

Builds, installs, and performs maintenance on steam, gas, water, compressed air, oxygen, vacuum, refrigeration, air conditioning, heating and waste disposal systems; maintains these utilities to prevent fire and other hazards to personal safety. Reports to the Director of Facility Engineering.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lays out, installs, and maintains all water carrying or drainage piping, fittings, and fixtures and equipment, and completes work reports as directed.

• Maintains valves to regulate proper flow and prescribed temperature.

• Lubricates, according to schedule, motors, compressors, and other moving parts; stores in approved covered containers all flammable materials.

• Inspects air intake sources, screens, and filters, as applies to assigned equipment with special attention to "high risk" areas.

• Responsible for changing filters as scheduled on HVAC systems in Hospital and medical office buildings.

• Inspects motors, belts and valves for proper alignment, working condition and unusual wear; corrects and/or reports any malfunction.

• Reads thermometers and gauges; records readings in log.

• Maintains exhaust systems, fan motors, dampers, ductwork and insulation, regulating air flow as designed.

• Responsible for welding, brazing or cutting of: stainless steel, aluminum, structural steel cast iron and dissimilar metals, i.e., steel to cast nickel to steel. Capable of welding in any position.

• Responsible for fabricating new and/or repairing existing steel frames, stainless steel dietary equipment, etc.

• Uses fire fighting equipment in emergencies; keeps all exits and stairways free from obstructions.

• Maintains a clean and orderly work area which includes proper tools maintained in a clean and fully operational state of repair.

• Promotes and fosters the mission and philosophy of the Hospital during performance of job duties and community activities.

• Actively supports and participates in Hospital's Continuous Quality Improvement endeavors.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• This position requires you to follow standard precaution guidelines in all work situations.

• Satisfactory rating in the duties and responsibilities.

• Completion of all required Hospital and Departmental education.

• Maintenance of the minimum credential or license required by the job description,

  or meet the conditions as defined under Experience and Job Knowledge.

• Is responsible for attending all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position.

  EDUCATION:

  High school graduate or equivalent. Graduation from trade school or apprentice program for plumbing and welding strongly preferred.

  EXPERIENCE:

  At least three to four years experience and background in plumbing and welding strongly preferred. Ability to braze, weld and solder (or silver solder) as required. Understanding of all codes relating to job requirements.

  CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:

  No CPR required.

  PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  Stands, walks, crouches, kneels, climbs, carries and lifts (50 to 75 lbs.); handles and manipulates tools and equipment. Operates pipe bending and welding equipment, pipe cutters, wrenches, taps, dies, reamers, etc.

  SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Familiarity with all building codes as they pertain to plumbing.

• Must be able to work from diagrams, blue prints, and verbal instructions.

• Must be able to diagnose trouble with plumbing fixtures and repairs.

• Must hold a valid driver's license and have clean driving record.

• Must be trustworthy in safeguarding confidential information.

  EXPOSURE CATEGORY:

  Category III. Tasks that do not involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues. And Category I tasks are not a condition of employment.
