    Position Summary

    HIGHLIGHTS

    SUNY Geneseo is seeking a new team member to join our Facilities Services department as a Trades Specialist (Painter). In this position, you will perform journey-level painting work. This includes preparing surfaces and applying coats of paint, varnish, and other finishes to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces and fixtures of buildings, structures, furniture, equipment, and materials.

The successful applicant will have:

  • working knowledge of characteristics (i.e. durability, suitability, ease of handling) of common types of paints and finishes

  • working knowledge of painting techniques, practices, equipment, and materials of the trade

  • working knowledge of the acceptable use of colors following color harmony schemes

  • ability to erect and work from scaffolds, swing stages, and ladders.

  • ability to estimate the quantity of paint and related materials required to complete a project

    Required Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Four years of full-time experience in painting under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in painting at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

Job Duty/Responsibility

Function 1: Painting Tasks

  • Apply paint, varnish, stains, enamel, or lacquer to interior and exterior surfaces, trimming and fixtures of buildings, furniture, equipment, signs, and like surfaces requiring protection or decorative treatment.

  • Estimate the area to be painted to order the kind, quantity, and quality of paint and other materials to be used

  • Assemble materials, tools, and equipment required to accomplish work

  • Erect scaffolding, swing stages, and ladders

  • Prepare surfaces for painting using a variety of tools and materials including sandpaper, brushes, steel wool

  • Remove paints using paint remover, blow torch, wire brush, and scraper

  • Fill nail holes, cracks, and joints with putty, plaster, or other filler

  • Use premixed paints or prepare paint tip match specified colors by mixing the required portions of pigment, oil, and thinners

  • Paint surfaces using a brush, spray gun, paint roller, or mittens

  • Drywall and plaster work, including hanging, finishing, and repair

Function 2: Supervision

  • Supervise and instruct others in the preparation and painting of interior and exterior surfaces.

  • Assign work to painting crew.

  • Provide instruction and/or demonstrate proper painting techniques and the use of painting tools and equipment

  • Observe and inspect the work while in progress and when completed to ensure that the job is done properly

  • Ensures that the rules and regulations of the facility are followed
