Columbia County Highway Department Highway Equipment Maintenance Mechanic in Hudson, New York

HIGHWAY EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE MECHANICSDISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: work involves responsibility for performing repairs, which require a high level of skill, to diesel and gasoline powered, self-propelled andnon self-propelled motor driven equipment, vehicles and stationary equipment. This class differs from Automotive Mechanic by virtue of required knowledge of and skill in maintaining the hydraulic, electronic, fuel injection and supercharging systems common to diesel power plants, as well as making overall repairs and operate a wide range of heavy equipment commonly used in highway construction and maintenance. General instructions are received regarding tasks to be done with leeway allowed for the use of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Candidate is expected to perform related work, as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:-Performs skilled operations in repairing/overhauling diesel and large displacement gasoline powered motor -equipment including trucks, tractors, loaders, bulldozers and excavators;-Repairs and replaces oil and fuel pumps, alternators, fuel injectors, superchargers andwater pumps;-Replaces engine block cylinder liners;-Installs replacement main bearings and crankshafts;-Adjusts connecting rods and bearings;-Diagnoses trouble/repairs or overhauls, brakes, transmissions, clutches, electricalsystem, front & rear axles; ---Troubleshoots and makes repairs to complex hydraulicsystems found on trucks, road sweepers, sanders and construction equipment;-Adjusts steering mechanisms, aligns wheels and repairs vehicle bodies and frames;-Maintains sand spreaders, snow blowers, arc welders, portable compressors, and otherpower equipment;-Operates a variety of construction equipment to determine problems and insure repairsare made properly; --Performs vehicle inspections;-Operates a truck in connection with the removal of snow, and in the transportation ofpassengers, equipment, sand, gravel and supplies;-Operates a tractor or truck with power mower, trailer, snow loader, bulldozer, concretemixer, stone crusher or other equipment;-Operates a power grader, steam roller or snow plow;-Performs manual labor such as loading trucks, erecting snow fences, cleaning culvertsand shoveling snow;-Maintains inspection and service records;-Mounts and dismounts snowplow blades and other auxiliary equipment;-May use an arc welder or acetylene torch to make repairs;-May instruct others in diesel engine servicing procedures.FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:Good knowledge of diesel and large displacement gasoline engines and methods associated with their maintenance; Good knowledge of terminology, tools and safety precautions associated with heavy automotive equipment maintenance; Good knowledge of the operation of tractors, trucks and other automotive equipment; ability to operate automotive equipment; Good knowledge of the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of repair shop equipment; Working knowledge of machine shop procedures; Ability to accurately diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical and hydraulic problems for gasoline and diesel powered equipment; Ability to read and interpret technical motor equipment repair manuals, circuit diagrams and blueprints; Ability to understand and utilize computer diagnostic equipment; Ability to understand, diagnose and make repairs to computerized sand / salt spreading equipment; Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; Good manual dexterity and coordination; Ability to deal effectively with subordinates; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or the possession of a high schoolequivalency diploma and two (2) years experience as a skilled automotive mechanic, at least one year of which shall have involved the repair and maintenance of heavy automotive and / or construction equipment.NOTE: Successful completion of a certified training course in diesel engine repair offered by a New York State approved technical training institute may be substituted for one (1) year of experience described above.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a CDL (Chauffeurs Drivers License) class A or Bpermit at the time of appointment.
