Lilly Scientific Director - Drug Delivery and Injection Physiology in Indianapolis, Indiana

The Drug Delivery and New Product Innovation group within Lilly’s DDCS (Delivery and Device Connected Solution) function studies physiological barriers across various routes of administration to apply and create novel patient centric drug delivery solutions. With a broad focus to develop injection device platforms and novel delivery devices to improve patient care, the group focuses in serving as a center of excellence in the following areas:

  • Injection physiology and new device ideation

  • Novel routes of administration/new modalities

  • Drug delivery of new modalities (such as nucleic acid therapeutics), monoclonal antibodies, synthetic peptides, and small molecules

  • Digital biomarkers and nanomedicine

Position Responsibilities:

  • Building foundational knowledgebase in the area of injection physiology interface for different routes of administration (subcutaneous, intradermal, Intrathecal, and intracochlear, orally ingestible injection devices) to optimize drug delivery of various modalities (biologics, viral vectors, small molecules) to inform product development

  • Ownership to advance drug delivery technologies through feasibility studies using knowledge from injection physiology interface and drug delivery

  • Lead small team of scientists and engineers to increase fundamental knowledge base for subcutaneous drug delivery and other novel routes of administration.

  • Understand, inform, and support the drug delivery and device strategy

  • Oversee, design, and execute preclinical and clinical studies to increase fundamental knowledge and/or inform delivery and/or delivery device /design based on PK, dose, and ADME information.

  • Develop strategy and build capabilities (logistical and toolbox) to enable early phase platform/delivery through clinical trials

  • Build strategic cross functional relationships within MIH and across all TA/BU to ensure early integration and support for combination product development

  • Identify, evaluate, and monitor external delivery technologies in the device and nanomedicine space, build business case, and drive appropriate partnerships

  • Serve as technical advisor for innovation project teams to ensure technical rigor and considerations

  • Effectively summarize and communicate strategy, progress, and risks to internal and external stakeholders, including executive committee members

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in pharmaceutical science/molecular medicine/drug delivery with at least 12 years of experience.

  • Experience in Formulation, drug delivery, and injection systems biology.

  • Hands-on experience 5+ years in ADME science with experience in overseeing translational studies (preclinical)

  • Hands on experience designing and executing in vivo animal studies, data analysis,

  • Effective technical writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills

  • Data driven decision making skills

  • Ability to build cross functional relationships and communicate across various disciplines.

  • Ability to effectively prioritize and balance technical and business needs.

  • Ability to lead cross functional teams outside of direct reporting structure

  • Ability to work effectively with external partners
