Job Description

Features and editorial assistant, Style - 1 year FTC

We are looking for an organised and imaginative journalist with digital experience to join The Sunday Times Style team on a one year fixed term contract.

The successful candidate will be expected to carry out administrative tasks, generate and write content for social media and the magazine, and support the editorial team with research and chasing stories. You should have a keen interest in fashion and pop culture; be a witty and accurate copy editor and writer; be bursting with original ideas for Style features; and understand how best to present our stories to our digital audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Administrative duties including processing payments, transcribing interviews, ordering office equipment, booking couriers and managing the department’s post, supervising work experience and interns, supporting the editor with diary management and travel planning

  • Devise and help to commission distinctive and engaging Style content for our digital platforms as well as in print

  • Track down and build contacts and organise interviews on behalf of editors and writers

  • Carry out research for articles on behalf of editors and writers

  • Liaise with our digital teams to ensure we present our stories in the best way and bring them to as many readers as possible

  • Help manage the Style social channels

  • Edit copy and write thoroughly researched, entertaining, accurate features

Skills and experience

  • Witty, stylish and clear writer

  • Journalism qualification or equivalent

  • Ideally has had features published in a national newspaper, magazine or website

  • Digital (website, social or apps) experience

  • Regular and dedicated consumer of a wide range of publications and digital media, particularly fashion and features content

  • Familiarity with desktop and digital publishing software

  • Good understanding of SEO, social media techniques and digital storytelling

  • Persuasive presentation skills, well-developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to problem-solve and negotiate positive outcomes

  • Able to communicate succinctly and effectively

  • Is punctual and is always prepared to put in extra time and effort when necessary

  • Has a proactive approach to work and regularly reviews how things are done to maximise efficiency

  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance
