To support our growth objectives at AXIS, we are continuing to invest significantly in our exposure and modelling systems. This position is for a Senior Developer within the Exposure and Modelling Development Team.

You will be providing your expertise, critical thinking, and creativity to help evolve our Risk Management ecosystem in new and innovative ways.

As part of a global team, you will be working with highly experienced talent to enhance existing solutions and design new ones to deliver and integrate capabilities across exposure management, catastrophe modeling and (re)insurance pricing.

All new solutions developed by the team use a modern and progressive cloud first technology stack. In terms of programming languages, we primarily code in c#, python and SQL.

Meticulous data management is a crucial aspect of what we do. For big data crunching duties, we primarily leverage Azure Databricks to provide a scalable solution for transforming and persisting the large datasets generated by catastrophe model simulations.

What will you do in this role?

As a Senior Developer within the Exposure and Modelling Development team, you will primarily support the Property and Cyber Modelling business teams.

In your role as a senior member of the team you will be expected to take the lead on various workstreams. In practice this means that you will be expected to:

• Offer technical expertise in the form of overall solution design

• Collaborate with other adjacent IT teams such as Platform Engineering, DevOps and Data and Analytics

• Set tasks for other more junior team members and offer mentorship when needed

• Take overall responsibility for code quality and delivery of a feature through all stages from requirement setting, through to testing and final release into production

Furthermore, you will play a key role in continuing to develop a culture of software and data engineering excellence within the Exposure and Modelling Development team. This includes embracing best practices such as detailed pull requests, appropriate testing of work, peer review and thoroughly understanding user requirements.

You may also be required to take on additional duties, responsibilities and activities appropriate to the nature of this role.

What you need to have:

Development Skills

Essential experience and skills:

• Backend development using the Microsoft/Azure stack (c#, SQL) with the proven ability to independently design and build new solutions from the ground up

• Thorough understanding of object oriented and functional programming paradigms

• High proficiency using GIT

• Well-practiced in creating CI/CD pipelines

• Experience with Agile methodologies including scrum and kanban

• A test-driven approach to developing software

Desirable experience and skills:

• Big Data (Databricks, Snowflake)

• Familiarity with and a passion for architectural design patterns and concepts such as Event Driven, Message Driven, Microservices and Serverless

• Front end (web technologies, JavaScript frameworks such as React and Angular)

Domain Experience

Essential experience and skills:

• An analytical mindset and the ability to reliably translate complex business domain requirements and algorithms into production ready code

• The ability to find ways to quickly and efficiently query and sense check a variety of data types to find and identify anomalies and issues

Soft Skills

• A collaborative approach to working is essential, whether at the team level, with our business customers or other teams within IT

• A natural curiosity that drives constant improvement both in terms of the technologies we use and the business problems that we’re trying to solve

What we prefer you to have:

• A background in specialty insurance and reinsurance, working with exposure data and modelled loss data

• Any previous experience that proves a high level of numeracy and an eye for detail when working with data
