What You Will Do

This job posting will be used to identify Engineering Technologist 1 or Engineering Technologist 2 applicants depending on the skills of the selected applicant and match them to open positions across the Weapons Engineering directorate (ALDW) at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). ALDW requires engineering technologists to be responsible for integral nuclear weapon engineering design expertise in the multiple areas including systems engineering, experimental device design, fabrication and assembly, surveillance, production of nuclear stockpile components, engineering analysis and computational simulation, weapons response and testing for evaluation and maintenance of the enduring and future nuclear weapon stockpile. In addition, our ET staff operate and service complex equipment including a variety of devices systems: electrical, mechanical, pneumatics, vacuum, pressure systems, safety interlock and other critical system components that are critical to high consequences of safety.

Principal responsibilities will be to provide integral nuclear weapon engineering design expertise in the multiple areas including systems engineering, experimental device design, fabrication and assembly, surveillance, production of nuclear stockpile components, engineering analysis and computational simulation, weapons response and testing for evaluation and maintenance of the enduring and future nuclear weapon stockpile.

Engineering Technologist 1 (ET-1) ($83,900 - $136,600)

Successful applicants will perform the following duties in this position:

  • Provide support in the areas of design, manufacture, assembly and testing.

  • Help determine proper processes for product development, including fabrication, material selection, machining methods/equipment selection, tooling/fixtures, inspection, and assembly techniques.

  • Perform computer-related activities, such as preparing input data and using computer programs for computerized solution of technical problems, support of control systems and use of CAD systems for drawing preparation.

  • Resolve straightforward mechanical engineering problems for hardware design, fixturing and tooling.

  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

  • Promote a strong collaborative work environment

Engineering Technologist 2 (ET-2) ($92,300- $151,000)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the successful applicant will:

  • Lead small project teams, providing technical leadership and oversight in planning and execution

  • Provide insight, expertise, and direction of manufacturing and assembly processes used in fabrication, including material selection, machining methods/equipment selection, tooling/fixtures, inspection, and assembly techniques.

  • Develop solutions to engineering problems in support of hardware design and/or testing. Conducts calculations and performs analyses in support of design engineering

  • Work with engineering staff to prepare and/or carry out changes in design, methods of manufacture/assembly, and drafting techniques/procedures in area of discipline; coordinate corrective actions.

  • Demonstrate and promote team building and collaboration as well as conflict resolution

  • Interact with all levels of personnel and customers, with demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through to completion on multiple tasks under strict deadlines and changing priorities.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Design and Manufacturing Experience

Experience designing mechanical hardware assemblies and applying engineering concepts to mechanical designs. Working knowledge of ASME, AWS, IEEE and related engineering, design and manufacturing standards. Knowledge of fabrication processes, related equipment, hardware and materials.

Communication and Teamwork

Demonstrated effective and efficient written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated record of developing constructive, cooperative working relationships and working with teams to meet deliverables.

Education/Experience

Education/Experience at the Level 1: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at the Level 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated mechanical design, manufacturing or assembly experience in the weapons program

  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment, procedures and operations

  • Demonstrated experience with +PDMLink Product Lifecycle Management Software

  • Experience with ASME Y14.41 Digital Product Definition Data Packages and annotated models

  • Experience with practices and procedures used in the Nuclear Security Enterprise for conveying design intent to other national laboratories and production plants

  • Active DOE Q clearance

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
