The role you’ll contribute:

The Emergency Department Coder is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and interpreting clinical documentation in the medical record, applying appropriate ICD-10 and CPT codes conventions and Medicare Prospective Payment System requirements. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

The value you’ll bring to the team:

· Reviews, analyzes, and interprets clinical documentation in the emergency room medical record applying ICD-10 and CPT codes in accordance with ICD-10 and CPT coding conventions, coding policy and procedures, requirements of Medicare and other payer specifications, and official coding guidelines as outlined by governing bodies.

· Assign correct ASC/APC modifiers to ensure appropriate reimbursement.

· Assigns correct revenue codes for all CPT codes, when applicable.

· Resolves edit accounts, re-classed accounts, and late charges and notifies the Manager of accounts that cannot be resolved in a timely manner through normal coding encounters.

· Ensures all clinical tests performed meet medical necessity according to local and national policies.

· Interacts with HIM employees and other departments to resolve record completion and/or billing issues.

· Remains informed of changes in the reimbursement systems and knowledgeable on coding conventions and current updates.

· Completes coding for multiple facilities in a timely manner.

· Maintains the confidentiality of employees, patients, administrative staff, and medical staff information with no infractions.

Qualifications

The expertise and experiences you'll need to succeed:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED :

  • High school diploma and successfully completed a medical coding certificate program or 2-year HIM program.

  • 1-2 years of outpatient coding experience in an acute care facility

  • RHIA, RHIT, CPC, or CCS certification
