About You and This Role:

Materials Engineering Center (MEC) in Dow’s Core R&D has an exciting opportunity for a Senior R&D Design Technician to develop and design new and innovative tools, dies, injection molds, equipment, and products located in Midland, MI.

The Materials Engineering Center is a center of excellence within the Engineering & Process Sciences (E&PS) capability of Core R&D for design, multi-scale modeling, fabrication, and application testing that provides a competitive advantage for Dow.

In this role, you will be expected to safely achieve project goals using technical and role-specific skills as well as experience. Projects typically are in the areas of equipment design, injection molds, extrusion dies, part design, and part measurement. Your responsibilities will include conceptual design, computer aided drafting modeling, print detailing, and assembly drawing to engage directly with clients and partner with the broader MEC team to deliver projects from concept to fabricated solution.

Responsibilities

  • Fosters a safe and inclusive work environment.

  • Effectively completes projects pertaining to conceptual design, CAD modeling, print detailing, and assembly drawing based on material, coating and surface treatment knowledge as well as CAD software knowledge.

  • Coordinates with rapid prototyping and fabrication shop to complete work.

  • Scopes and develops detailed project plans to meet team deliverables in partnership with broader team.

  • Proficient at taking concepts and transferring them to mechanical design.

  • Develops and lays out original design concepts and detailed designs.

  • Has awareness of proper fabrication techniques (e.g., CNC/milling/EDM/grinding) and processes and awareness of designing for these techniques.

  • Demonstrates speed and flexibility as required to anticipate and respond to changes as required to overcome obstacles and complete projects.

  • Consistently demonstrates initiative and proactivity to create technical solutions.

  • Works with leadership and broader team to ensure requests are appropriately prioritized, completed, and reported.

  • Documents results and completion of projects by helping to write clear, concise, and timely reports, etc.

  • Schedules, leads, and participates in design and progress reviews as well as team meetings.

  • Communicates with project stakeholders about project status and changes.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of an Associates degree in a science related discipline/Military Degree Equivalency (MDE) and 3 years of relevant work experience or high school diploma/GED and 5 years of relevant work experience.

  • A minimum of proficient in CAD.

  • A minimum of proficiency in Microsoft applications.

  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong grasp of engineering and design principles / mechanical aptitude.

  • Associate degree or Higher in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Design, Computer Aided Drafting, or Pre-Engineering.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Prior Mechanical Design experience.

  • Proactive individual who takes the initiative to find solutions to technical challenges.

  • Excellent organization skills.

  • Able to work collaboratively in a diverse team environment.
