Job ID359653 LocationTwin Cities Job FamilyCampus Operations Full/Part TimeFull-Time Regular/TemporaryRegular Job Code9731ME Employee ClassAcad Prof and Admin About the Job Description of Position Provide leadership and guidance on the design of HVAC and plumbing systems in the Twin Cities campus mechanical equipment and piping systems including steam, chilled water, potable water, sanitary sewer, and natural gas. Provide guidance on the proper maintenance of buildings and systems relating to the use of energy and the consumption of all utilities provided. Provide mechanical engineering expertise for construction and repair projects for University of Minnesota Facilities Management (FM) Operations and Construction. Responsibilities Develop and prepare designs of moderate to high complexity for remodel construction projects in existing University of MN Twin Cities Campus buildings. Mechanical system design could include HVAC ductwork, chilled and heating water piping, steam piping, energy recovery systems, laboratory exhaust and piping systems and domestic plumbing systems. Prepare specifications for design proposals, including repairs and modifications. Self-prepare designs and specifications to meet established engineering standards and all applicable codes. Provide technical support to trades responsible for the repair, maintenance, replacement and installation of new HVAC and plumbing systems. May also include some building facility support. Investigate and troubleshoot utility infrastructure and building facility problems and/or coordinate and review similar work by outside resources. Review designs and documents prepared both internally and by outside consultants to ensure conformity with University standards and work/operational practices. Review the impact of new designs on existing systems. Review on-going and completed projects to ensure adherence to University quality requirements. Direct project design concerns to University project managers and/or correspond directly with consultants. May serve as team leader of interdisciplinary project teams. Facilitate the timely and thorough completion of projects. Represent the department at various meetings. In the field of practice, provide input in development of written University standards to ensure conformity with all federal, state and local codes (building, fire, environmental, etc.) May serve as team leader for persons in field of practice to include coordinating, assigning and reviewing work under their direct supervision. Essential Functions * HVAC and plumbing system analysis and designs for remodel projects in existing buildings. * Prepare HVAC and plumbing system construction drawings and specifications for remodel projects in existing buildings. * Coordinate engineering system design solutions with applicable project managers and trades. * Coordinate and review HVAC and Plumbing system designs for applicable code compliance * Provide technical support in field of expertise. * Review designs and documents to ensure compliance with University standards for future, on-going or completed projects. * Provide input in developing on-going standards. Salary Range: $97,000-$107,000 Work Environment Work is performed in an office setting as well as out in the field. This position will be exposed to potentially hazardous conditions where hearing and visual protection will be required. Must be able to walk and climb to physically access and view various sites. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Graduate from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. In addition, at least six years of progressively more responsible experience in project design, drawing review, technical evaluation, troubleshooting activities in HVAC and plumbing systems for existing buildings. State of Minnesota registration in mechanical engineering is preferred but not required. It will be a requirement to advance in the organization. Knowledge, Skills and bilities * Proficient skill in preparing sketches and drawings with the use of AutoCAD. * Working knowledge of REVIT preferred but not necessary. * Proven skill in Microsoft Office suite and group e-mail software. * Understanding of digital communication, presentation and filing systems. * Ability to listen well and exercise reasonable judgement in application and interpretation of construction standards and building code requirements. * Ability to work collaboratively with others to address and resolve problems. * Highly developed written (including technical writing), verbal, interpersonal and persuasion skills with both internal and external parties. * Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks, resolve problems, negotiate solutions and identify and analyze unit and departmental priorities to ensure work efforts and resources are employed appropriately. * Ability to balance multiple work demands and to thrive in a changing environment. * Demonstrated ability to lead change and to gain support and commitment from others.
