Knox County Engineer Mechanic ll - Knox County Engineer's Office in Mount Vernon, Ohio

Objectives

The Knox County Engineer's Office is seeking a full-time Mechanic II to join their team. This is a classified, bargaining unit position. Among their many duties, a Mechanic II inspects, tests, repairs and maintains engines, performs preventative maintenance, operates welding equipment and cutting troches, snow removal and minor body work.    Knox County offers competitive wages, excellent benefits including paid time off and comprehensive insurance coverage. Essential Functions

35% Inspects, tests, repair and maintain diesel/gasoline fuel engines, electrical, hydraulic, intake, exhaust and related systems; rewiring and adjusting as required; replacing parts such as pressure hoses/fittings, universal joints, carrier bearings and drive shafts as necessary; replace worn bearings, install piston rings, replace clutch discs and pressures plates and other similar activities. 20% Performs preventative maintenance including, but not limited to changing oil and filters; checking and maintaining proper fluid levels such as antifreeze and power steering; charging/replacing batteries; lubricating moving parts; winterizing activities and other related duties. 10% Operates welding equipment and cutting torches to weld and/or cut snowplows, sand spreaders, mowers and other items as needed; dismantle, constructs, repairs and/or maintains bridges, culverts, guardrails and related appurtenances utilizing welding equipment. 10% Performs snow removal activities and spreads salt and/or sand for snow and ice control. 10% Performs minor body work and change/repair tires as necessary. 10% Maintain accurate records (written and computerized) to include maintenance and service reports, order reports, and similar records. 5% Maintain a clean and orderly work area in accordance with departmental guidelines. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Incumbent works under general supervision and follows established policies, procedures, work methods, directives and terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Caution and appropriate safety measures must be exercised when carrying out duties to prevent injury to self, others, and property. Must maintain a telephone at place of residence or a cellular phone. Perform all of the duties of Highway Worker II and all other duties as assigned. Job Standards

Must possess a valid high school diploma or GED; training in diesel engines/construction equipment repair, welding, cutting processes, and fabrication or related work experience. Must possess a valid State of Ohio Commercial Driver's License, Class A or Class B, with tanker endorsement.  Ability to: interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, picture, or schedule form and to communicate in common English language; maintain accurate detailed daily records; correctly analyze, identify and solve mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems malfunctions in various county vehicles and construction equipment; interpret and act upon writing instructions, policies and procedures pertaining to work orders and other related assigned duties; to use computer programs to diagnose problems with diesel engines and/or electrical systems; maintain accurate written and computer records reflecting work performed and parts and materials used.
