CLASS TITLE: Automotive Mechanic I

PURPOSE OF THE CLASSIFICATION:

Engaged in basic servicing and maintenance work on light and heavy automotive equipment.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

Performs tuneups, carburetor overhauls, rebuilds transmissions; requisitions parts and supplies.

Operates valve grinding machine, drill press, hand press, cutting torch and arc welder; overhauls engines on passenger cars and light to medium trucks; participates in overhauls on diesel engines for graders, tractors and bulldozers.

Participates in repairs of hydraulic systems in fork trucks, garbage packer trucks, street repair trucks and loaders with hydraulic systems.

Rebuilds generators, starters and electrical systems including alternators.

Repairs and replaces brakes and clutches; repairs and aligns front ends; repairs exhaust systems.

Learns to operate new technologies as they are developed and implemented.

Performs other work as necessary and or as assigned.

Must report to work on a regular and timely basis.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

The Automotive Mechanic I reports directly to the Vehicle and Equipment Management Leader II.

The Automotive Mechanic I does not have any direct reports or supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Training and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent plus two years of experience in automotive mechanical work including one year at the journeyman level. Graduation from automotive mechanics school can be accepted as an equivalent amount of experience.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Must have knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform required maintenance and repair functions. Must be able to maintain cooperative working relationships with fellow employees. Ability to work long and sometimes irregular hours under difficult conditions as required. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions and maintain repair records.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. While performing the duties of this job, arm and hand steadiness and finger dexterity will be needed enough to use a keyboard and telephone. Occasional sitting and standing is required. Frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds. Occasional lifting up to eighty (80) pounds, reaching, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, twisting, handling and repetitive movements. Vision, speech and hearing sufficient to perform essential tasks. Punctuality and reasonable attendance is essential. Must submit to drug screening and fitness to work physical exam.

Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Oklahoma Class B CDL preferred or the ability to obtain within nine (9) months of employment.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work in this classification is both indoors and outdoors. Will travel to other City locations as required.

Notice: This classification is a safety sensitive position as defined by the United States Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations, the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act and/or the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana laws. As a safety sensitive classification the employee will be subject to drug and alcohol testing including random testing. Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening. Possession of a medical marijuana license will not excuse the employee from the testing process or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.

MINIMUM PAY: \$14.20/hr. - \$20.31/hr. Excellent employee benefits (insurance, vacation leave, sick leave, retirement, holidays).

WORK HOURS: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some emergency callouts.

WORK LOCATION: City of Muskogee Fleet Management Department, 1400 South C Street, Muskogee, Oklahoma.
