Statement of the Job:

Full-time, regular position, 40 hours per week, 5 days per week. Daily work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position pays $23.92/hour. Perform regular and routine maintenance on mechanical, HVAC and aquaculture systems at the Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research in Franklin, Maine. Troubleshoot and repair equipment as needed.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Installation, maintenance, service and repair of facility equipment - includes but is not limited to pumps, blowers, motors, boilers, HVAC, heat exchangers, UV sterilizers, filters, piping, and automated controls.

• Position requires frequent use of power tools and test meters.

• The Mechanical Specialist works under the supervision of the Systems Manager or Director of Operations on project tasks, with general guidance on project priority and planning.

• The work is primarily non-routine in nature due to calls for service and the variety of assigned projects.

• Will be expected to assist other staff with building projects that require carpentry and piping skills, and to perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.

• May be required to work with companies or researchers using the facility, to assist in installation, service and repair of their equipment.

Position is based at the Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research, in Franklin, Maine. The facility conducts research and development on valuable marine plants and animals held in various tank systems with associated life support equipment. The Mechanical Specialist position functions to ensure that site equipment is serviced and maintained on a regular routine basis. Must have good communication skills and be able to work as part of a team. The work environment can at times be wet, cold, and dirty. Exposure to noise associated with machinery and dust and odors related to construction will be intermittent and of short duration. Odor associated with the fish and feed maintained at the Center is rare and of short duration. Incumbent must react quickly and decisively to equipment malfunction. The ability to adapt to changing circumstances is essential. Off-hour emergency response is carried out by salaried staff in shared pager rotation and the Mechanical Specialist is not expected to share in this duty, but may occasionally be asked to assist with off-hours emergency repair.

Qualifications:

Required:

• Must have high school degree or equivalent.

• Must understand the full scope of mechanical trades work, with a minimum of three years’ work experience in any one or a combination of: mechanical repair, facilities or equipment maintenance, building trades, electrical/HVAC or plumbing work.

• Must have a valid Maine Drivers’ License.

• Must be able to perform physically demanding tasks such as occasionally lifting heavy objects up to 100 lbs and frequently exerting up to 50 lbs of force, standing, and operating power equipment.

• Must be able to read and understand written operating and technical instructions.

• Ability to communicate with University staff to schedule and plan projects.

Preferred:

• Knowledge of Honeywell controls or related systems.
