General Atomics and Affiliated Companies Intern year-round Mechanical Engineer in San Diego, California

Year-round. Part-time (approximately 20 hours per week.) Must be San Diego area based and a current student.

We currently have an exciting Chemistry Engineer Internship opportunity in our Inertial Fusion Technology (IFT) Group at General Atomics in support of target fabrication for the National Inertial Fusion program in San Diego, CA.

The IFT Group is a lead fabricator of precision components in support of fusion ignition experiments at the National Laboratories. Undergraduate students studying Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or related major from an accredited university are encouraged to apply.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works under general supervision in the IFT Group to assist in activities related to fabrication, metrology, and quality of precision components

  • Candidate will be mainly responsible for assisting in capsule fill tube assemblies in support of the National Inertial Fusion Program.

  • There will be extensive hands-on lab work required.

  • Much of the work will involve small scale mechanical assemblies and advanced metrology methods.

  • Supports staff in other areas related to inertial fusion technology and target fabrication as required

  • Participates in the day-to-day activities of the assigned functional area assisting in the completion of advanced tasks and problem-solving

  • Communicates and presents on results of assigned projects

  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires enrollment as an undergraduate student at a recognized college or university.

  • Candidate must have a strong laboratory work ethic, and adaptable to other target fabrication and characterization needs as they arise.

  • Experience in wet chemistry and advanced microscopy techniques would is preferable.

  • Engineering, Materials Science, Physics or related major preferred.

  • Ability to learn and use complex and technical equipment.

  • Communication skills necessary to write and record precise information as well as interface with staff in a professional environment.

This position pays at an hourly rate of $26.00 per hour.
