We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Mechanical Engineer within our Abbott Rapid Diagnostics business located at San Diego, CA. In this role, you will provide technical expertise to the design and development of point-of-care, rapid in vitro diagnostics (IVDs) for Infectious Disease.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The position of Senior Mechanical Engineer provides mechanical engineering skills and expertise to a R&D team developing products for point-of-care testing. The focus of this individual will be on design, prototyping, testing, and debugging of cartridges and subsystems. Collaboration with the broader R&D team, consisting of assay development scientists and instrument hardware/software engineers, is essential to delivering new products from concept to launch. The ideal applicant has a strong mechanical engineering background.
Tasks and responsibilities:
Creates and improves designs for microfluidic cartridges and similar IVD consumables.
Designs and assembles proof-of-principle prototypes. Conducts feasibility studies of the design to determine ability to function as intended. Uses the data to drive design iterations.
Leads troubleshooting efforts to determine root cause for mechanical failures
Work with the larger team to evaluate and integrate technologies into a platform that meets product requirements.
Maintain detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development and assist in transfer to manufacturing.
Coordinate activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure the delivery of supplies or services needed to meet scheduled timelines.
Identify and communicate with key contacts outside own area of expertise.
Perform other duties & projects as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
BS in Mechanical Engineering and >5 years of experience in product development.
Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
Skills in solid modeling (SolidWorks)
Ability to work hands-on to make prototypes and test fixtures
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Organized and detail oriented.
Preferred
Experience in medical device development and design controls.
Machining experience

The base pay for this position is $83,600.00 – $167,200.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
