Army Installation Management Command Maintenance Mechanic in Tacoma, Washington

Summary This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: The Public Works Directorate at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, leads the industry in providing exceptional infrastructure, resource, and facility management services. Responsibilities Perform maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, disassembly, overhaul and refurbishment on commercial and industrial Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems. Maintain and repair air cooled chillers to ensure efficient operation. Monitor, inspect, test and adjust various system controls: direct acting systems, electric and electronic systems, pneumatic, microprocessor Direct Digital Control (DDC) and mixed control systems. Diagnose split system air conditioners or heat pump systems that is not functioning correctly using systematic approach and test equipment. Repair, test, and recharge HVAC systems with applicable refrigerant after repairs. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Minimum Qualification: Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision performing common Maintenance Mechanic duties. I can locate and perform common maintenance of HVAC/R {heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration) equipment in facilities; changing filters, cleaning strainers, drive belt replacement, greasing bearings, and cleaning coils. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journeyman employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - PHYSICAL EFFORT: Stoops, stretches, bends, kneels for long periods of time and works in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions. Equipment worked on is large and must be moved in and out of specific locations. Frequently sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavier. Weight handling equipment is available when handling large units, up to 6000 lb. Ladders, scaffolds and platforms may be used when working on large systems or roofs. Must be able to distinguish basic or shades of colors to prevent risk of electrical shock when wiring equipment. - WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed both outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Subject to sudden temperature changes and extreme cold during repairs to cold storage plant and large walk-in refrigerator equipment. Exposed to possibility of broken bones from falls from ladders or scaffolds. Requires wearing of protective safety equipment (respirators, shoes, glasses, ear protection). Possibility of burns and/or electrocution when working on electrical equipment (24 to 460 volts). May be called upon to perform asbestos abatement, encapsulation and repair. (INCLUDING BLUEPRINT READING) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) USE OF MEASURING INSTRUMENTS (MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL, ELECTRONIC, AS APPROPRIATE TO LINE OF WORK) Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.
