WSP USA Associate Air Quality Scientist in Vancouver, British Columbia

At WSP our Environmental Management team provides environmental services that include air quality dispersion modelling; meteorological / air quality data analysis; the assessment of air quality impacts; air quality monitoring and regulatory guidance to position WSP as a leader in the market . We're looking for a Junior Air Quality Scientist/Engineer-in-Training to join the team and to be located at our Vancouver, BC office. For this position you will support the team’s Project Managers, Environmental Scientists and Engineers team in the field and the office working on air quality and environmental impact assessments projects.

What you can expect to do here:

  • The position is approximately 30% field work 70% office work. This may vary depending on project load and time of year.

  • You will assist with analysis of air quality issues, assessment of air quality impacts, and recommendation of monitoring and mitigation programs.

  • You will assist with conducting air quality assessments and air dispersion modelling projects (i.e. CALPUFF, AERMOD), ranging from large industrial complexes and regional airsheds to industrial or commercial emission sources, in support of regulatory approvals, environmental impact assessments or special studies.

  • You will conduct site visits and field work related to your discipline area. Up to approximately 50% of your annual hours could be spent in the field. Field work is primarily in the Metro Vancouver area but travel out of the area and to more remote sites can also be anticipated.

  • You will operate and calibrate monitoring equipment to measure air pollution and show how it is distributed throughout the atmosphere.

  • You will maintain, repair, and audit air pollution and meteorological equipment.

  • You will be conducting air quality data analysis.

  • You will assist with completing air emission inventories.

  • You will assist with preparing technical reports and applications for submission to regulatory authorities on behalf of Company clients.

  • You will always ensure health and safety policies are followed at all sites and take WSP's Life Saving rules to heart.

  • Other duties as assigned or required in your role.

  • Potential for overtime depending on workload

We'd love to hear from you if you have...

  • 1+ years of related experience with a focus on air quality monitoring, analysis and/or dispersion modelling;

  • A University degree or technical diploma in atmospheric sciences, environmental science, chemical, mechanical or environmental engineering or related discipline;

  • Experience in some or several areas of: environmental management; emission inventories; dispersion modelling; regulatory reporting; pollution control/prevention; industrial processes; new project development licensing and permitting; environmental impact assessment is an asset;

  • You possess strong computer skills (GIS, Linux OS, R, Python, Fortran, MySQL, PHP, etc.),

  • Training or aptitude with electronics and instrumentation and familiar and comfortable using standard hand tools relevant to the job

  • Wording should be improved but “ Good understanding of hand tools and comfort setting up equipment” I almost want to say something like “the ability to install a wall mount for a TV or wire a speaker system”.

  • Ability to lift 30-50lb / 13-22Kg of equipment or supplies on the job

  • A good understanding of applicable provincial and federal regulatory guidelines and directives;

  • Good initiative and attention to detail;

  • A desire to work well in a multidisciplinary environment and respond well to the technical challenges within set time constraints;

  • A “can do” attitude, a strong career interest in consulting with ability to work well in a team environment;

  • Active enjoyment of outdoors, in all seasons and weather

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; and

  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license with no restrictions. Access to a personal vehicle to support field work is an asset.

Compensation

Expected Salary (all locations): $53,900 - $91,700
