Your new role, what's involved?

We are seeking an Associate Mechanical Engineer to lead our Gas Networks engineering resources, within our Energy Transition Team. Working as part of a large engineering group you will lead the development of Mechanical resources and their design work on a wide range of Energy projects from initial inception through development, construction, operation and decommissioning. Projects typically include; gas transmission and distribution (T&D) pipelines and associated above ground infrastructure, LNG plant, hydrogen and carbon dioxide infrastructure.

Our team’s expertise covers all gas and hydrogen infrastructure and technologies, including novel, first of a kind concepts and other low or zero carbon technology such as biomethane fuels. Working together with regulated T&D utilities, private developers, government bodies, banks, lending agencies, contractors and OEMs we safely deliver projects whilst meeting and exceeding client expectations.

You should be experienced in the delivery of feasibility, concept, FEED and detail design work, and be familiar with working with OEMs, Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) Contractors or a similar organisation. Experience of working in regulatory support, due diligence services, lenders technical advisory services and asset integrity would be advantageous to help support our clients with technical advice on their existing facilities and operational plant.

Location is flexible across our UK office network.

Day to day you will

  • Lead the Gas Network mechanical resource team to develop cost-effective, efficient and innovative solutions to complex problems to create practical designs based on these solutions

  • Work on projects in a variety of stages of maturity, including Feasibility Studies, Concept Designs, FEED Studies, Value Engineering and Detailed Design

  • Prepare Mechanical deliverables such as calculations, equipment specifications, datasheets and reports for T&D pipelines and associated infrastructure

  • Work closely with multi-discipline team in the development of designs for process, piping, mechanical, civil, electrical & instrumentation details, etc…

  • Support the development of plant layouts and plant 2D / 3D models

  • Work with equipment vendors on developing designs and participating in technical evaluations of vendor designs

  • Provide engineering advice and technical solutions to gas & hydrogen projects;

  • Lead the development of the Gas Networks team within the wider Energy Transition team including recruitment, personal development reviews, resource reviews, training, etc…

  • Develop proposals and bids for the Gas Network team and contributing to other multi-disciplinary proposals

  • Collaborate across WSP UK / Global and develop key UK gas client relationships

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • Ability to produce technical reports, perform site appraisals, design calculations and the management of project drawings together with technical independence within the field of gas and hydrogen transportation, distribution and storage systems design.

  • Good knowledge of the relevant UK and international gas industry design codes such as IGEM/TD/1; TD/13; TD/4; TD/3; ASME: B31.8; B31.3; B31.4; PD8010 etc. and be well versed in the development of project documentation, preparation and interpretation of drawings, Materials and Equipment Data sheets. Familiarity with UK gas design governance processes GL/5, G/17, G/35 and PS/6 would be advantageous.

  • Knowledge of Gas Industry standards IGEM, Cadent, SGN, NGN, National Grid, WWU and GIS would be advantageous. You will also be aware of current and emerging technical and legislative requirements and applicable guidance documents.

Experience:

  • Possess a good knowledge of the legislative processes associated with planning, design and technical consents process.

Qualifications:

  • Ideally, degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline

  • Chartered status (CEng, MIGEM, IMechE, MEI) or have equivalent technical experience to work towards this
