Position Summary

Working collaboratively with all members of the care team provides world class service to both the patients and staff of Martin’s Point. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and according to defined policies and procedures, the CNA performs various service duties and technical tasks such as taking vital signs; supports the communication needs of patient and family; provides care that reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations. Specific duties may vary by area of assignment. Consideration of the special needs and behaviors of specific patient populations is required.

Job Description

Key Outcomes:

Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse, organizes and provides basic nursing care for patients and their families.

  • Performs and records various duties necessary to provide complete care within established standards, policies, and procedures

  • Provides onsite care that may include rooming patients, taking vital signs, obtaining a chief complaint; and collecting specimens

  • Contributes to the development of the patient plan of care under the direction of the Registered Nurse

  • Assists with appropriate outreach efforts to close gaps in care

  • Communicates patient care information to other health care team members, including changes noted, by verbal report and/or documentation of patient care provided according to policy and procedure guidelines

  • Assists Registered Nurse with treatment procedures and reinforces selected patient teaching initiated by the Registered Nurse

  • Assists in the orientation of other staff

  • Maintains patient and unit area in a clean, orderly, and safe manner

  • Assists in storing and retrieving equipment and supplies

May perform other duties as assigned within the CNA's scope of practice.

Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:

With additional training as delegated:

  • Performs an electrocardiogram.

  • Obtains a swab for surveillance culture.

Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • One year of continuous CNA experience is required

Required License(s) and/or Certification(s):

  • A High School Diploma or GED is required

  • Must be certified as a Nursing Assistant by the State of Maine and be on the State of Maine Registry, having completed a six-week or equivalent course

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or attainment within 6 months of hire

Skills/Knowledge/Competencies (Behaviors):

  • Demonstrates an understanding of and alignment with Martin’s Point Values

  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments

  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations

  • Ability to read, write and speak English to transcribe and communicate approved provider's orders at a level normally acquired through a high school education

  • Knowledge of standards, policies, procedures and organizational structure of the unit, the Department of Nursing, and Martin’s Point Health Care

  • Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to exchange information and maintain courteous relationships with patients, families, visitors, and Martin’s Point Health Care employees

  • Consistently models high standards of practice, accountability, and professional attitude

  • Serves as an orientation assistant and role model for other CNAs

  • Viewed by staff as a resource that is accessible and approachable

  • Promotes the development of collaborative relationship with the healthcare team members by articulating patient care issues and communicating in a constructive manner

  • Provides unit-based in-service/education or develops a unit education presentation/packet

  • Identifies opportunities for improvement in work processes and contributes to the implementation of improvement efforts
