The WCU Painter applies a variety of paints, stains, varnishes, and other coloring materials to interior and exterior wood, masonry, metal, and other surfaces using application tools and technique such as brushes, rollers, and spray guns; prepares finished and unfinished surfaces; assess space to determine resources needed; and the color match's paint.

*Responsibilities include: *

  • Apply water-based or oil-based paints, stains, varnishes, and other coloring materials to a variety of interior and exterior wood, masonry, metal, and other surfaces using brushes, rollers, and spray guns
  • Prepare surfaces to be painted by stripping paint and sanding surfaces using heat guns, sandpaper, sandblasters, scrapers, chemical paint solvents, or vacuum-type sanders 
  • Perform minor repairs to surfaces to be painted using spackle, plaster, or other appropriate materials
  • Assemble and disassemble scaffolding; haul and erect ladders 
  • Clean brushes, rollers, spray guns and work areas 
  • Make minor repairs to equipment
  • Remove glazing compound, replace broken glass, and re-glaze windowpanes
  • Caulk window frames, doorframes, and other areas
  • Apply wallpaper or vinyl covering
  • Function as a lead worker over helpers and other maintenance staff by assigning work, providing on-the-job training and assistance, and reviewing projects for adherence to specifications and standards
  • Perform related work as required

This position is deemed "essential" and must remain or report to work during partial or full day closings of the University due to hazardous road conditions, emergency circumstances or for other reasons. The ability to work overtime when needed is also required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three years of experience in the painting trade

OR

  • Successful completion of the Building Trades Trainee program (commonwealth title) 

OR

  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal (technical school) paint training and education
